Alice Palace and Christmas
Alice Palace and Christmas
I have another book lovin’ person I’d like to introduce you to. She’s four years old and is developing a penchant for books, words and people. I love the idea of seeing books and reading and words and ideas through the eyes of a child. We certainly talk about the importance of reading to children. I’m giving one of those littles a voice on this blog. Please welcome, Alice Palace. “Alice” because that’s her given name and “Palace” because rhyming is awesome. She was thoroughly thrilled about having a “job” writing a post. This is her first post of many: Alice Palace and Christmas.
Okay, but before we read the delightful and much anticipated first post let me just say this.
There’s one particular reason for Alice’s love of all things book: it’s her mom, Charli.
That doesn’t mean her dad doesn’t play a part in it, because he does. It’s just that her momma eat, sleeps and breathes books.
That happens to be a photo of a stack of books recently purchased from Charli’s favorite local bookstore. I asked her to describe her feeling about books in a sentence. Here’s the first thing that came to her mind.
“When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes.”
–Desiderius Erasmus
Which is to say that Alice Palace comes by it quite naturally.
Here’s her very first post. [Her momma is her scribe.]
Alice Palace and Christmas
We wrap our Christmas books up and after that lots of nights we get to read a Christmas book and unwrap them before we read them. After that we get to have too much fun and then go to bed. My favorite Christmas books are the gingerbread ones, because they make me laugh. I also like snakes. Christmas snakes.
[By way of explanation, a Christmas snake is likely one that is red and white striped. Imagination for the win.]
I also like the Santa book.
I like how funny it is. I laugh. The kids play all day long and they try to catch Santa, but they can’t lasso him or lure him with giant candy canes or put him in a snow trap. They send a card to him with glitter in it and put carrots in the chimney for reindeers. And they all sing. Then Santa came and some of the people were awake and Santa was up on their roofs. With his reindeer. The kids didn’t really catch him this time. That was a naughty choice they did when they tried to catch him. I’m happy he got away, but I still like that book.
I love Christmas and all the seasons. Even Thanksgiving and Easter. I am such a good girl. I also like Christmas a lot. I love kitties and horses and unicorns and ponies and sheep.
I like Christmas all day long. I still love it in the night.
I like when we decorate the tree and when we open the presents. I love Santa. I like to give Santa cookies.
What we should play is duck duck goose with monsters. Some people get to be monsters and then there’s a duck and goose.

My favorite part of the post?
“I like Christmas all day long. I still love it in the night.”
As a side note, her family really does “wrap [their] Christmas books up.”
It’s a tradition that Charli loves, and so do her little girls. Alice and Bonnie get to choose a book every night before going to bed.
It’s really wonderful.
The gift of a book.
The gift of reading a book to someone.
What are your Christmas book favorites?
what do you think?
