Beach Reads — Some Karen Some Don’t.
Beach reads! Summer is coming—WAHOOSERS—and I couldn’t be more excited! My summers are usually jam packed at the library with all the summer reading programs and activities we’ve got planned (seriously, check out your local library for fun summer activities) and this year I’ve planned more than ever before. However, this year I’ve also planned a little something special for myself. A week long vacation on the Oregon coast. Yay for girlfriends and beach houses! It cannot come soon enough and I’m eagerly anticipating sitting on the beach, soaking up some sunshine and reading book after book after book!
My list of beach reads is growing every day and I’m going to have to make some painful decisions come June so I thought I’d share my list with you. This way even if I don’t get to read everything on the list I can sleep at night knowing you might have benefited from all my hard work (joyful searching). Please let me know if you read or have read any of these books and what you thought. Also, I want to hear what is on your Beach Read list.
KAREN, THE BEACH GOIN’ LIBRARARIAN’S BEACH READ BOOK LIST
***Okay for the sake of full disclosure, I’ve already read some of these but they were so awesome that you need to check them out! I’ll add an arrow (—>) if I’ve read it.
Between Shades of Gray by Rita Sepetys
Every time hear this title I think ’50 Shades of Gray’ which this is definitely not—can I get a hallelujah?
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
This has been on my list for years and this summer I’m going to read it if it’s the last thing I do!
Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan
An award winner that I’ve neglected.
—>Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
The movie is coming out this fall and you owe it to yourself to read the book first.
Mosquitoland by David Arnold
I tried listening to this at night but my tiredness wouldn’t let me so let’s give it another try.
—>A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
Loved this memoir where the author shares his experiences raising his little brother after the death of his parents but be warned, the language is rough.
Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt
Recommended by a co-worker with exquisite taste.
—> The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Bradley
I read this over the past weekend and it is a gem.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Herold Fry by Rachel Joyce
I purchased this for the library because the title is delish but haven’t read it yet.
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katrina Bivald
I judged this book by its cover.
1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
This is sitting on my bed side table, chiding me every night I don’t pick it up.
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
I read the review for this when it was published but never read it. Now the movie is being made so the countdown has begun
Panic by Lauren Oliver
I like the author and it’s getting great chatter online.
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng
I know nothing about this but really liked the description.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
Neil Gaiman is a favorite author and I’m ashamed of myself for having not read this yet.
Last but not least…
Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea by Guy Delisle
This author writes in graphic novel form about his travels around the world. I purchased Pyongyang but also hope to read his GN’s about Burma, Shenzhen & Jerusalem.
