The fabric of our lives | July 25
The fabric of our lives. [Are you a little bit singing that in your heads, because that would be marvelous.] Can I please just tell you that if everything goes as planned YOU are going to be delighted out of your minds. If it doesn’t [and, realistically, that is the most likely scenario] then perhaps you will simply be delighted. That is all that I can share with you at this very moment about the project. Except for this part: Handsome Dude is helping me out. Aaaand it’s not a craft project that you can paint, sand, sew, glue, draw, cover, trim, recover, restore, or assemle. Enough! I can say no more. ~smile~ This week has been a great one for finishing up projects. [Excuse me while I go dance. I’m not kidding. Be right back.] That was a blast. [May I enthusiastically interject here that if you ever feel like dancing, you should just dance.] Okay. The deal with this post is that I feel you must know how I feel about fabric. Are ya’ feelin’ it? One word: swoon. Swoon-swoon-swoon-diddy-swoon. I know I’m not the only person even within the sound of my voice yelling from the back porch that feels this way. I see fabric and my heart goes all melty and my brain starts to automatically combine textures and patterns and then projects start rushing in like there’s no tomorrow and then I feel compelled to purchase something–like fabric.
Have you ever gone into a fabric store just to walk down the isles and imagine what you would do if you could have all the fabric in. the. world? And you grab bolts of the fabrics with little regard to the safety of small children or old people [or anyone for that matter] that you can’t see because you are now behind a pile of fabric so high that you need a belayer and carabeeners [that is such a great word and how fabulous is it that it worked its way into a post about fabric] to successfully navigate its height?
Me either.
That would be ridiculous, of course.
Here are a few of my favorite sewing projects from the last year–and maybe a little more. Particularly the kind of project that required a little bit of mixing and matching which is just about my favorite thing to do.
First up: dresses.
Weddings are a great reason to dress up.
The picture isn’t fabulous–but little Lillie is. Ruffles, tulle and ribbon. If I could get away with wearing a dress like that, I’d be all over it.
The next one isn’t for a wedding, but couldn have been.
[There is definitely a flower on the waistband theme going on here.]
I used the same dress pattern for both. [You can purchase a dress made and ready to wear for the price of a pattern. That’s only a slight exaggeration.]
You have to know making dresses isn’t very economical.
But who cares? When the little people you make the dresses for look this adorable–AND–you are rolling in the dough–AND–the mommas you make the dresses for are so grateful–well–that’s why I sew the dresses.
Here’s another “wedding dress” for a grateful momma and adorable child.
You know I’m not rolling in the dough, right?
You also know that it is easy-sneezy to the sweet creek moon and back to do things for grateful people.
I am also noticing how adorable I am when a child is standing in front of me.
~grin~
Okay and alrighty. That’s enough of dresses.
Here’s a chair that my sister gave me many moons ago. It’s a wonderful, sturdily built little chair which just means it’s worth the cost/effort to re-cover it.
That fabulous houndstooth fabric will look familiar to anyone who’s seen the most recent finished project: the red chair. I’m not going to cover every chair in the house with it–but almost. The fabric is that great.
It’s not a huge chair so you rarely find Mr. So-Long-Legs Handsome Dude sitting in it–though I imagine he longs to. It’s a great chair. I mostly just let people look at it. Every once in awhile I’ll allow someone to come in from the street and gaze upon it–but they’re never allowed to sit. Ever.
I leave you with a fabulous picture of the rather fantastic pillow that is atop the chair at this moment in exactly the same position because it has been permanently glued and stapled to it [memories are important to me–don’t be messing with my memories] and a reminder.
Here’s the pillow [which isn’t actually glued or stapled to anything].
And here’s the reminder.
