Some Karen, Some Don’t

Since I’m going to be posting monthly on this here website I feel I need a pithy name for my entries. ‘Karen’s Korner’? Too 1970’s. ‘Let’s Read with Miss Karen’? Too kindergarten teacher. ‘READ THIS!’? Far too loud. Then I remembered a nickname I was given as a wee babe by my pediatrician. He was a bit of a jokester who loved to give snarkie names to kids (he nicknamed my sister ‘the bawling bowling’) and I was not exempt. Happily I avoided a commentary on my behavior and he just got punny with me.  Some Karen, Some Don’t, lives on in familial infamy. It also seems like a fitting title for my monthly posts because, I assume, some of you are not interested in what I have to say about books and… that’s okay. You can now just skip these entries which are easily identifiable by my nifty nickname!

Now onto those who “Karen”.
*wink*

2016 is upon us, all fresh and new and full of possibilities. Some like to write down hopes for the New Year on a post-it or in a journal with those hopes becoming goals to better oneself in the upcoming year. I have never been this person. I see goals as something I set so I can inevitably fail and then feel bad about. And feel bad I do because my goals are often vague platitudes like “nothing tastes as good as thin feels” which cannot be true because dutch oven potatoes taste delicious. So, rather than set myself up to fail in 2016 I have decided to create some reading hopes. I’m gonna read books. I cannot not read books so why not throw in a few tomes that might benefit me in some intellectual, spiritual, inspirational or happy-making way?

With that in mind I’m going to share my reading resolutions with you. These may or may not be books that you would regard with interest but maybe it’ll inspire you to create your own reading resolutions list.

RR#1  Year of Yes: How to Dance it Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes

I gifted this book to a friend and when it arrived I wanted to keep it. Rhimes is a writer for some hit tv shows I’ve never watched (Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder) and is an introvert who specialized in saying “No” to invitations to fun & cool things. Then one day her sister commented “you never say yes to anything” and Shonda realized it was true. She decided to spend a year saying “Yes” to all those things that scared her and this book is a little record of that year.

Her story sounds so familiar to mine because I’m extremely introverted and shy. I often say “No” because the thought of being in an unfamiliar situation with unfamiliar people is terrifying. I’m beyond interested to see how “Yes” changed her life and a little intrigued about the possibilities of saying “Yes” myself.

RR#2  How To Get Dressed: A Costume Designers’s Secrets for Making Your Clothes Look, Fit & Feel Amazing by Alison Freer

*sigh* I have a confession… I’m fat. Seriously. Not just a little over weight. I’m a big girl and it has always hindered my confidence in choosing clothing. I do have in mind a personal style that I’d like to make mine but making it happen has been frustrating because I don’t know how to find clothes that fit correctly on my soft serve ice cream cone shaped body. Any tips on altering my existing wardrobe and seeking out new items to add will be very appreciated.

RR#3  Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling

Nothing educational here just pure fun. I love to pick up memoirs by funny people. I’ve read some by Jim Gaffigan, Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Jenny Lawson and Mindy Kaling. I need a little humor in my new year and this looks like something that will supply some smiles. Smiles = Happy 🙂

RR#4  What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe

What if everyone on earth aimed a laser pointer at the moon at the same time? What if all the lightning in the world struck the same place? If a bullet with the density of a neutron star were fired from a handgun (ignoring the how) at the Earth’s surface, would the Earth be destroyed? I want to know and this book appears to have the answers.

So there you have it… (some of) my reading resolutions. Feel free to steal them if you are intrigued. I also what to hear what your reading resolutions are because I like to steal too!

Happy New Year everyone!!!
